CAMPAIGN: END THE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES ![]() On June 10, 2008, the Canadian show "The National" did an extraordinary twenty minute piece on horse slaughter. It explained that while the US has a temporary ban on horse slaughter, US horses are being trucked to any of seven slaughterhouses in Canada to be killed, and that the horse slaughter business in Canada has grown 75% as a result. The horses may be trucked from the US for 36 hours without food or water, and they face gruesome deaths when they arrive. The piece makes clear how urgently we need to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would ban the transport of US horses to other countries for slaughter. ![]() Global Support: For ways to take action in support of saving horses click here. It includes distressing footage and a moving voiceover with sections such as: "Inside the holding pens at Natural Valley Farms, the latest shipment of horses wait quietly for what the morning will bring. Race horses who've stopped winning, work horses who just aren't working out, the pets of teenage girls who've moved away to college. " A good thought to remember is "We must not refuse to see with our eyes what they must endure with their bodies." So please at least click the link (stations count clicks) and watch what you can. CALL TO ACTION FOR US HORSES The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to kill off wild horses, arguing that they cannot "allow horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental disaster." But there are less than 30,000 wild horses on the American range versus at least 3 million grazing cows. The reality is that the BLM has mismanaged its budget and is now trying to lower its costs by taking aim at wild horses. Please send a message to the BLM Director, urging him to stop this wrong-headed plan - you can help! Please click HERE and sign the petition to stop the BLM from driving US wild horses to extinction. URGENT UPDATE! ![]() DETAILS:
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to kill America's wild horses rather than effectively manage our wild natural heritage. BLM claims it can no longer afford to round up wild horses and confine them until it finds people to adopt them, and the agency wants to euthanize these majestic wild beauties or sell them to the highest bidder "without limitation" - meaning sell them to anyone, even if the bidder also plans to kill these horses. Why does BLM need to round up wild horses and send them to slaughter? The BLM claims that the agency can't "allow horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental disaster." But there are less than 30,000 wild horses on the range versus at least 3 million grazing cows. So rather than address the environmental damage caused by cattle overgrazing and expanding oil and gas exploration on our public lands, the BLM would rather placate corporate cattle ranchers who view mustangs as competition for forage, and drive wild horses - our country's symbol of freedom and independent spirit - to extinction. This plan is simply outrageous. Stand up for our wild horses and send a comment to BLM today. Urge our government to abide by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act of 1971 and effectively manage the land to preserve wild horses rather than kill them! ACT NOW TO SAVE WILD HORSES! All new!
